The white button shirt is a must in any wardrobe. This staple is so versatile it can be worn with virtually anything and give a variety of looks, both casual and dressed up. A classic button down in all silk looks casually elegant with any good pair of denim jeans or maybe a cotton Emma Willis bespoke boyfriend shirt paired with neutral day trousers is more your style on a warm spring day. I love layering my white button down under sweaters and a coat or also pairing with a super chic skirt and a statement necklace. Like I said, the possibilities are endless and the perfect go too when you don’t want to spend much time planning what you’re going to wear on a rushed weekday morning.
THE FOUR TYPES OF WHITE BUTTON DOWN SHIRTS YOU SHOULD HAVE IN YOUR CLOSET
When shopping for a classic white button down, there is a few ways to go and it’ll all come down to how you like to dress and your own personal style, however I would defiantly suggest owning a few variations. In no particular order:
- The Boyfriend Style: Slightly oversized yet tailored enough too compliment a woman’s shape, this style looks great with jeans or trousers, rolled up sleeves and a statement accessory such as a cool watch or gold layering necklaces. This style should be owned in 100% cotton because you want some starch or firmness to the fabric.
- The Silk Blouse: Nothing is more elegant and luxourious than silk draped across the skin and I love to mix fabrics such as silk and leather or silk and denim to bring some softness to an outfit. Equipment makes classic silk blouses at a great price point and is worth the investment.
- The Classic Fit: Classic fit, slim fit, call it what you will but you want to have a white button down that hugs the shape of your curves perfectly. This is the shirt you pull out when you want to feel more put together. Its the shirt you’ll use with a pant/skirt suit combo or maybe worn with a statement bottom or statement accessories. I also like this fit best when layered under a sweater because its not as bulky as the ‘boyfriend style’.
- The Interesting Cut Blouse: I always turn to some of my favorite avant garde designers such as Junya Watanabe or Vivienne Westwood for their unusual and experimental interpretation to classic shapes. I always enjoy adding interesting cuts and pieces to my wardrobe to build on my personal style and showcase my love for fashion and art.
HOW TO KEEP YOUR WHITES LOOKING THERE BEST
This is the cleaning tip I use for every single white or light colored piece of clothing I own in order to avoid the dreaded yellow underarm stain and keep your whites looking there brightest for as long as possible.
You have to wash your white shirts immediately after each and every wear!
That was it; ‘You have to wash your white shirts immediately after each and every wear. YES! Immediately! After! Each! And! Every! Wear!
That’s it. Thats the trick to keeping your whites looking their best. You have to wash or send it off to the dry cleaners straight away in order to keep that pesky yellow stain at bay. Even if you think your shirt is clean and that it doesn’t need a washing, you have to clean it immediately anyway. I understand that this advice I’m giving you may sound extreme and it is tedious; trust me, I know, but it works and I have been doing this for years to battle the stain before it starts. If you’re like me who invests in clothing, this is the only way to avoid yellow stain build up.
