When building a wardrobe I believe there are five outerwear staples that every woman should have in her closet. Today we are going to look at the wool coat, the trench coat, a leather jacket, the blazer jacket and the parka winter coat. These fives are, in my opinion, the first starter coats you should have in your closet when building on your outerwear pieces.
THE WOOL COAT

The wool coat; it can be tweed, cashmere mix, single buttoned, double breasted, pea coat, belted, possibilities endless really but the idea the same; everyone needs a quality coat that fits them perfectly and beautifully, complimenting the shape of the body that works well for day or night. A great coat will instantly make you look and feel put together. A person will most likely have different versions of this type of coat, but the premise is the same, a wool coat is a necessity when building a classic, functional wardrobe. I would say that of all the type of coats on this list, if you had to buy only one, make it a wool coat.

THE TRENCH COAT

A trench is great on days when its not quite that cold where you’d need something heavier such as a wool coat or a parka, but not warm enough that you could go without anything. This is the ultimate fall weathered coat, perfect for transitioning from fall to winter or from winter to spring. You could opt for a classic trench from Burberry or Saint Laurent or you could add a piece that is cut more interestingly on its classic shape such as JW Anderson or Junya Watanabe. I’ve found all styles below.

THE LEATHER JACKET

Oh, the good old, trusty, leather jacket. I’ve added the leather jacket to the list because its a great choice when adding texture to your wardrobe. Now, there many are different style options to choose from; edgy biker, cool bomber, sleek blazer, a belted trench even; but my favorite bit about a leather jacket is how well a leather piece ages and forms to the body over time. I really enjoyed shopping for leather outerwear for you all. See my choices below.

THE BLAZER JACKET

I love a good blazer. It’s perfect for cooler summer nights and crispy fall day. I recommend investing in a blazer that is well made and tailored to fit perfectly against the body such as in a dreamy Balmain blazer or an Alexander McQueen piece. Don’t spend much on the trendy oversized pieces popular today, but a blazer that fits like a glove is irreplaceable.

THE PARKA JACKET

The last coat on the list is the trusty parka coat. I understand this might not be useful for some in the warmer parts of the world but this is a staple for those, who like me, live in an area where it gets to below freezing during the winter months. I wear this coat A LOT and often like to view it as a ‘running around doing errands’ coat during those miserable cold months. I can’t stress this enough, invest in your parka. It will hold up, last you a very long time and keep you warm. Also, don’t be afraid of color. Personally, I have never purchased a black parka because I love color too much and most importantly, I love how color makes me feel on miserable cold day and I find it to be an instant mood booster. Whatever you fancy, I’ve found loads of styles below.

I’ve got a list of secondary coats and jackets I feel should be added after, or in place of some of the styles I’ve listed today when building an outerwear capsule collection coming right up. Take your time when looking for a coat to buy and you should always invest in this piece. It is often the only piece of clothing that most people will only see you wear and you are going to want some variety. This helps spreading around wear and usage and helps maintain the longevity of your pieces.
Let me know below in the comments what and where you favorite coat is from. See you in the next one!
